Yan White at Tower of the Sun, Osaka

Yan White is a London-born artist working across painting, printmaking and digital mediums, pursuing a continual process of intuitive exploration, discovery and refinement.

The work using physical media is influenced by ideas from Mono-ha, Gutai and Dansaekhwa, as well as Abstract Expressionism and its’ subsequent evolutions. The focus is on exploring the essential nature of mediums through colour, texture and interaction, as well as themes of language, iconography, gesture and a developing a poetry of our post-everything reality.

By working with layers and cultivating process, surfaces evolve and express counterpoint between time, scale and depth. Current explorations include gestural abstraction, layering dye with monotype, paintings based on gravity and fluid dynamics, combining analog and digital studio processes, working with generative art and text to image algorithms (Midjourney) and considering how these mediums might inter-relate and impact the meaning of image-making. The work is ultimately oriented towards balance, harmony and invoking positive stillness or energy.

Yan is currently a student on the MA Fine Art at City & Guilds of London School of Art, and previously studied Art & Design at Chelsea College, Sonic Arts at London College of Communication, and worked as a web & graphic designer.

He is also a musician, plays guitar in The Council of Neptune, and has self-released various recordings and been involved in various musical projects over the years, including facilitating meditatve sound journeys. His latest album ’Spira’, inspired by the pandemic, geopolitical tensions and a return to the healing power of nature and breathing, is on Bandcamp.
